Podiatry

The term "Cosmetic Foot Surgeon" - unlike the USA - is only now becoming a recognised term in the UK. As an NHS-trained Consultant Podiatric (foot) Surgeon, Mr Nandlal currently holds two NHS Consultant Posts. He also works in the private sector in North London. As such he has performed over 4000 foot and ankle procedures and feels it is very important that patients are made aware that the foot is a unique and complex mechanical structure. Operating on any foot deformity, whether for foot pain or cosmesis, requires a complete understanding of foot biomechanical function, which is essential for excellent post-operative results. This highly specialised area using biomechanical principles is unique and integral to the training of Podiatric Surgeons.

Patients often complain of bunions, unsightly lumps & bumps; bent hammer toes and flatfoot deformities. These can range from arthritic bone bumps around the joints of the feet, to soft-tissue lumps such as ganglion cysts. These may be unsightly and painful and can usually be very simply removed, although arthritic joint lumps may indicate more serious joint disease and can require more extensive surgery. Even painful and unsightly corns can most often be cured by a quick & simple operation.

Painful or not, patients may still be very embarrassed about their feet and frequently report that they would never wear sandals or expose their feet, for example on the beach or at the swimming pool. The feet are certainly no less deserved of cosmetic attention than any other part of the body and providing patients are made aware of the range of post-operative potential risks and complications, as for any operation, then cosmetic foot surgery can be undertaken. But remember, it is possible to end up with a straighter looking foot or toe which hurts more than it did prior to surgery!

A Modern Foot Specialist

Podiatric surgeons are the only practicing foot surgery specialists in the UK whose entire training spans eleven years totally dedicated to the foot and associated structures. Further to this they are the only foot specialists in the UK who are formally examined in foot surgery and foot surgery techniques.

Having initially gained a 3-year degree in clinical podiatry, award of Fellowship of the College of Podiatry (Surgery) - FCPodS - is gained after 5 further years of post-graduate training and examination by the Faculty of Podiatric Surgery, College of Podiatry. A further 3-years training under a Consultant is then required to gain the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) - 11 years in total.

Podiatric surgeons are independently trained (similar to dental surgeons), and are, therefore, not registered medical practitioners. They are registered under the regulatory body, the Health Professions Council UK (HPC). Mr Nandlal's HPC registration number is CH. 8732

Consultant Profile
Born and brought up in New Barnet and educated at Highgate School, North London.

After briefly considering a career in dentistry I opted to follow my father into Podiatry. My undergraduate education was at Plymouth School of Podiatric Medicine.

Qualifying in 1985 I soon undertook fellowship modules in the diabetic foot and rheumatoid foot. In 1987 I began my membership exams for the faculty of podiatric surgery. My surgical training was carried out in several centres including Northampton General, The Royal London Hospital, and finally Bridge Hospital in Witham, Essex.

On completion of my Fellowship into the Surgical Faculty of The College of Podiatrists, I continued to work for Maldon and South Chelmsford Trust. I became a Specialist in Podiatric Surgery after three years gaining a certificate of specialist accreditation.

After 5 years I was appointed, after panel interview, as a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon. I continue to work in two trusts in Essex.

Currently I am a primary peer reviewer for other consultant podiatric surgeons and a surgical tutor.

Almost all the conditions listed will be covered by your insurance. This is because, unlike purely cosmetic procedures, the vast majority of these conditions are painful for the patient; or will become painful if left long enough. If a condition has a recognised (OPCS) surgical code e.g. W7910, W0850 etc; and then health insurance benefit will be allowed. When using your health insurance, a GP referral letter is essential and you must talk with your insurance company before you come for your first consultation to obtain an authorisation number and with some insurers, a claim form to be completed by the specialist.
